Chelmsford Alexander Studio Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique

"The Alexander Technique will benefit anyone whether they are an elite athlete or whether they just wish to live life without the aches and pains that many people suffer and accept as part of life. It is a pity that these techniques are not shown to us all at an early age for I have no doubt that this would alleviate many of the causes of ill health in our communities."

- Greg Chappell, Australian test cricketer

WHAT IS THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE?

An opportunity to:

  • learn how to release painful muscular tension particularly in the neck, back and shoulders
  • understand the causes of lower back pain
  • correct poor postural habits which lead to discomfort while sitting, standing and walking
  • appreciate how stress and pressure affect everything we do
  • use a computer on a regular basis and not develop RSI, eye strain, a stiff neck or back pain
  • be more relaxed while driving
  • understand better how to pick up and lift many different objects - whether a baby, shopping or a crate
  • enjoy going to the gym or any other form of exercise without suffering stiffness later

WHY A TEACHER?

The Technique is not a therapy nor an exercise: it is a learning process.

Except in many ways it is an 'unlearning' process.

A teacher will enable you to become aware of how you can ‘undo’ inappropriate muscular tension so that everyday movement becomes easier.

In a one to one lesson, the teacher will use gentle ‘non-doing’ hands to reinforce the spoken word.

WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?

As the Technique is not a ‘quick fix’ be prepared to allow yourself the time for a series of 45 minute weekly lessons - ideally between 10 and 20.

Contact the Studio either by phone or email and discuss with us a booking for an introductory lesson.

No special clothing is required but trousers for ladies are helpful.

Lessons are informal, relaxed and should be thoroughly enjoyable.

The cost of an individual lesson is £35. Except in genuine emergency, cancellations within 24 hours of the lesson will be charged.
